Building Momentum: More Onions and Another Potato Experiment

I had errands to run, so I swung by the nursery again and grabbed another pack of onion bulbs. Back home, I waited until after school so Alvin could help with the next phase.

After supper, we headed out to the garden. First things first: everything needed water. We filled up four or five cans and gave all the previous plots a good soaking. Everything was nice and wet.

Then we got to work on the onions. Having done this the day before, we knew the process. We drew the lines, spaced the bulbs, and got into a rhythm. The second pack of bulbs was actually better quality—fewer bad ones—so we got more usable bulbs out of it. Where the first day we might have lost four or five, this time we saved an extra ten or so. Small wins.

Alvin and I worked well together. We were quick. Drew the lines, made the holes, planted the bulbs, and covered them up. Alvin took one section, I took the other, and we were done.

But we weren’t finished for the day. We decided to set up another pot for the driveway—this time for potatoes. We gathered sticks and chunks of wood (nothing too big), combined them with the stones we’d bought, and layered the pot the same way we’d done before. Will it work? Who knows. But we can try. We’ll see what happens.

That’s gardening, right? You plan, you execute, and you learn as you go.
